This project is a labor of love by Dylan Moriarty.
Zoo address and Red Pandas names come from Red Panda Lineage, a database made by Justin Fairchild, firefoxpanda88 and daniele.tokyo. It is incomplete, as it looks to be a volunteer effort. That said, it is to date the best resource I could find – and for the U.S. at least seems pretty good.
The zoo's addresses were geocoded with the HERE api. The natural habitat area was translated from the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources.
The map data comes from Natural Earth Data. That was then processed with Mapshaper and projected with Dirty Reprojectors, hat tip to Development Seed.
The map is built with Mapbox, and uses Mapbox GL JS to serve up these tiles.
For more information on Red Pandas, and how we can help keep them around, check out the Red Panda Network. Or, use this map as intended and go visit your local zoo and support them! Weather is perfect for it.
